Frequently Asked Questions
The US ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a digital travel authorization required by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for Visa Waiver Program nationals traveling to the United States by air or sea. It is electronically linked to your passport and verified by the carrier before boarding. You need an ESTA if you are a citizen of a VWP country — such as the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, or most EU member states. You do not need an ESTA if you are a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, or already hold a valid U.S. visa. Each traveler, including children and infants, must have their own approved ESTA.
No. The US ESTA is not a visa. It is a pre-arrival authorization that permits a Visa Waiver Program national to board a flight or cruise to the United States. Travelers from non-VWP countries must still apply for a U.S. visa — the ESTA does not replace visa requirements. Holding an approved ESTA also does not guarantee entry; final admission decisions are made by a CBP officer at the port of entry.
You should apply before booking travel, and at the latest 72 hours before departure, as CBP recommends. Most applications are approved within minutes, but some require additional review and can take up to 72 hours. Once approved, an ESTA remains valid for up to 2 years, so you can apply well in advance.
An approved ESTA is valid for up to 2 years or until the passport linked to it expires — whichever comes first. During that period it allows multiple visits of up to 90 days per stay. The ESTA is tied to the specific passport used and cannot be transferred. If your passport is lost, replaced, or renewed, you must apply for a new ESTA.
Yes. A US ESTA is required for Visa Waiver Program nationals even when only transiting the United States en route to another destination. The ESTA is required for travel by air or sea. Travelers entering by land (from Canada or Mexico) do not need an ESTA, though they complete a Form I-94 at the border.
Yes. An ESTA application can be completed on behalf of another traveler, such as a family member or group participant, provided all information matches the traveler’s passport exactly and proper authorization has been obtained. Each traveler must still have their own individual ESTA application, including children and infants.
Once submitted, you will receive a decision by email. Most applicants are approved within minutes; some require additional review and may take up to 72 hours. If approved, the ESTA is issued electronically and automatically linked to the passport used — no printout is required, and carrier systems verify it at check-in. If refused, the reason is provided, and you may need to apply for a U.S. visa instead.
No. This platform operates independently and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Government, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), or any other U.S. authority. We provide an optional assistance service that includes guided application support, verification checks, and customer support. All application and entry decisions are made solely by U.S. authorities.
